Kindness Is Universal: The Language That Needs No Words

Kindness is the golden chain by which society is bound together. – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

A warm smile. A simple gesture. A moment of connection matters where we are in the world, kindness speaks a language everyone understands.

During my recent trip to Zambia, I was reminded once again that kindness is universal.

A Connection Beyond Words

While visiting an orphanage, I met a young girl who was about twelve years old. It didn’t take me long to realise she was on the autistic spectrum. She didn’t speak, but her expressions were incredibly vivid, her eyes bright, her smile warm, her gestures clear and kind.

Despite the language barrier and her silence, we connected instantly. Before long, we found ourselves playing a version of Pat-a-Cake, Zambian-style.

It was both hilarious and heartwarming. She knew every move by heart, quick and confident, while I stumbled along, laughing at my own clumsiness. Each time I lost track, she patiently guided my hands, teaching me the rhythm all over again.

Occasionally, she’d wander off, only to return moments later, ready to continue our little game.

Kindness Is Universal: The Language That Needs No Words

As I made my way home later that day, I couldn’t stop smiling. That encounter reminded me that words are not always required to express kindness.

Sometimes, connection is found in shared laughter, eye contact, patience, or a simple act of inclusion. Mark Twain said it best:“Kindness is the language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”

It’s the same kindness I’ve witnessed across cultures , from the warmth of Brazilian hospitality, to the communal spirit of Ugandan generosity, to the everyday helpfulness that defines British kindness.

No matter the country or culture, kindness binds us. It is the common thread that ties humanity together.
