“Be the reason someone smiles. Be the reason someone feels loved and believes in the goodness in people.”
Last Thursday, the 13th of November, marked the International Day of Kindness, a day celebrated every year to remind us that compassion has no expiry date.
While most people were going about their day as usual, I had my own unexpected Memriz moment that made me pause and reflect on what kindness truly looks like in action.
Be the Reason Someone Smiles: A Simple Act of Kindness That Matters
That morning, I was travelling to central London with a group of colleagues. It was a long journey, about an hour and a half, and I had my favourite seat picked out, a little comfort I always look forward to.
But then someone in our group mentioned they suffered from motion sickness. Without thinking too much about it, I offered them my seat. It was such a small thing, but it made their ride easier and the journey far more pleasant for everyone.
Later that day, as I scrolled through my messages, I realised something remarkable, it was the International Day of Kindness. I smiled to myself. That small gesture, though simple, was exactly what the day was about.
Kindness in Action: Real Stories from the Memriz Community
When I opened the Memriz Community of Kindness chat later that evening, I was moved by the stories others had shared.
One member wrote about being in a stationery shop when a father told his son he couldn’t afford a mathematical set for school. Without hesitation, she stepped in, paid for it, and watched the boy’s face light up with joy.
Another shared how they offered a friendly smile to a stranger on the bus, a simple exchange that turned into a shared moment of warmth and connection.
These stories reminded me of the timeless truth behind the words of Aesop:
“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”
Make Every Day an International Day of Kindness
Kindness shouldn’t just be reserved for one day on the calendar. Every day holds countless opportunities to show compassion, to offer a smile, to lift someone’s spirit.
It doesn’t have to be grand. It could be letting someone go ahead in a queue, holding the door for a stranger, or sharing an encouraging word with a colleague. Each small act sends ripples far beyond what we can see.
As Mark Twain beautifully said,
“Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”
So why not make every day an International Day of Kindness?
