Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle you know nothing about ~ Wendy Mass
Kindness often shows up in the most ordinary places, quietly and unexpectedly. Sometimes, it appears in moments we are not even looking for it, reminding us that compassion is woven into everyday life if we choose to notice it.
An Unexpected Moment at the Hair Salon
The other day, I was at my local hair salon, a familiar space where conversation flows easily and time seems to slow down. I have known my hairdresser for years, and our appointments are always filled with light conversation and shared laughter.
On this particular day, while sitting at the wash basin with a towel wrapped around my head, an unexpected moment unfolded. A woman rushed into the salon, visibly excited to see my stylist. Their reunion was warm, affectionate, and full of shared memories. Laughter filled the room as they caught up on life, stories, and moments only close friends can truly understand. Then the atmosphere shifted.
When Joy Turns to Vulnerability
As the conversation deepened, the visiting woman began to recount a recent experience that had clearly caused her deep pain. Her voice softened, her laughter faded, and the weight of her emotions became tangible. The room grew quiet as she spoke, her hurt still raw and close to the surface.
Listening from the chair, I could not help but empathise. Her story mirrored an experience I had gone through not long ago. The pain she described was familiar, personal, and deeply human.
It reminded me that kindness is not just a gesture, it is an understanding. Mark Twain once suggested that kindness is a language everyone understands, precisely because everyone is carrying something unseen.
Choosing Compassion in the Moment
Without overthinking it, I gently introduced myself and shared a few words of reassurance. What started as a brief exchange became a meaningful conversation rooted in shared experience and encouragement. Before long, we exchanged contact details, with a sincere promise to stay in touch and offer support when needed. That promise mattered.
I made sure to follow through, checking in on her and even setting aside a small Christmas gift as a reminder that she was not alone and not forgotten.
Why Kindness and Compassion Matter
This experience reinforced something I have come to believe deeply, kindness and compassion are essential to human connection. They do not exist in isolation. More often than not, they strengthen one another, creating ripples that extend far beyond the original moment.
Maya Angelou captured this truth perfectly when she said that people may forget what you said or did, but they will never forget how you made them feel.
A Coincidence That Felt Like Confirmation
Just when I thought the story had ended, life surprised me again.
I recently attended an online book launch, only to discover that the same woman was present. During the event, she shared her experience of our chance meeting at the salon, describing how much that moment of kindness had stayed with her. I was genuinely blown away. What felt small to me had clearly meant something profound to her.

Have you ever experienced a moment like this, where a chance encounter reappears in your life in an unexpected way? A moment that felt like déjà vu, yet carried new meaning?
More importantly, what act of kindness have you offered that made someone feel seen, valued, and appreciated?
