Kindness is about doing something to brighten someone else’s day

"Kindness is about doing something to brighten someone else’s day."

Making the first move toward kindness can be surprisingly difficult. Whether it’s starting a conversation, offering a compliment, or simply smiling at a stranger, it requires courage. But the results can be unforgettable.

A Compliment That Started My Morning Right

Three days ago, I was waiting at a junction near work for the pedestrian light to turn green. A woman on a scooter pulled up, glanced at me, and out of nowhere said, "I like your hair."

Just like that. No hesitation. No small talk first.

I smiled, thanked her, and before I knew it, we were chatting as we crossed the road together. I walked away with a lighter step and a brighter mood. That one simple compliment, her first move, made my morning.

The Smile That Changed the Room

Last week, I found myself in a room full of strangers at work. As a naturally shy person, I froze. I wanted to break the ice but feared saying the wrong thing. So, I did the next best thing: I smiled at the person sitting nearest to me. She smiled back shyly at first, but then the person next to her smiled too. Before long, the whole group was smiling. The mood shifted, and the tension eased.

That’s when I remembered how contagious a smile can be. It doesn’t need words to create a connection.

Kindness is About Doing Something to Brighten Someone Else’s Day

These moments reminded me of something I’ve learned over and over: kindness doesn’t have to be grand to be powerful. For me, my purple-highlighted hair often becomes an icebreaker. People comment on it in car parks, bus stops, queues, anywhere. And when they do, it’s an opportunity to return the kindness, even with just a smile or a compliment in return.

You don’t need purple hair to do this. Maybe it’s a scarf, a hat, a piece of jewellery, or simply your warmth. Something unique about you might be the bridge to a stranger’s smile.

I once saw a sign in a restaurant that read: "A warm smile is the universal language of kindness."It’s true, it speaks to everyone, everywhere.
