Spread Kindness Everywhere
Some of the loudest kindness is the kind no one ever hears about.
“The best portion of a good man's life: his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love.” - William Wordsworth
You never know how heavy a heart is until you help carry it. Sometimes, we meet people and have no idea what they are carrying.
The person smiling beside you may be dealing with something they have not told anyone. The friend who says, “I am fine,” may not actually be fine. The neighbour who seems quiet may simply need someone to sit beside them for a few minutes.
And sometimes, the smallest act of kindness can make a person feel a little less alone.
A Quiet Reminder That Kindness Does Not Wait for a Date on the Calendar
Even though the calendar says World Kindness Day is still about a month away, this week in September carries a beautiful, quiet reminder that goodwill does not wait for a designated date. It belongs to every ordinary day.
This week celebrates human connection, from communities wearing red as a vibrant pledge of compassion to the very origin of names. So perhaps this is our little September reminder. Be gentle with people. You never really know what someone is carrying.
What the Name Anna Teaches Us About Kindness
I love how sometimes even a name can carry a beautiful message. According to the traditional calendar of name days, a particular day in September celebrates the name day of several historical names, most notably Anna. Derived from ancient Hebrew, the name Anna literally translates to mercy, grace, and kindness, rooted in compassionate virtue. It feels as though the universe is dropping subtle hints that the world needs your gentleness right now.
We live in a world where people are often encouraged to be louder, faster and stronger. But there is something powerful about gentleness too. Sometimes, strength looks like choosing not to respond harshly. Sometimes, love looks like giving someone another chance. Sometimes, kindness looks like simply asking, “Are you okay?” and staying long enough to hear the real answer.
George Michael and the Quiet Power of Anonymous Kindness
There are people who give without announcing that they are giving. They help without taking pictures. They pay for something and quietly walk away. These are the quiet givers.
Historically, late September has also become a time to retrospectively honour figures of extreme generosity. Think about the incredible legacy of quiet givers, the people who secretly funded medical treatments for strangers or volunteered in the shadows, never asking for a single ounce of credit.
Recent tributes often highlight icons like George Michael, whose staggering history of anonymous kindness, secretly funding IVF treatments for strangers and volunteering at homeless shelters, only came to light after his death.
He understood a profound truth. Kindness is not about the spotlight. It is a quiet superpower.
Sometimes, the most beautiful acts of kindness happen when there is no audience.
Kindness Does Not Need a Massive Budget
You do not need a massive budget or a grand stage to change a life, because true impact lives in the tiniest ripples. You do not need a plan for this. You just need a moment and a willingness to use it well. Here are a few places to start.
Send an unexpected “I appreciate you” message to a friend. You can offer to pay for, or gift, the next person in the queue, just to see them smile. It can be you giving a listening ear to a neighbour who might be feeling lonely.
Forgive someone. Check on the person who always seems to be checking on everyone else. You may think it is small, but they may remember it for years.
That is the beautiful thing about kindness. We often do not get to see the full journey of the good we put into the world.
Let September Be Your Reminder
As we move through September and look ahead to World Kindness Day, perhaps we should stop waiting for the perfect occasion to be kind. We can start today.
Today, you can make someone smile.
Today, you can make someone feel seen.
Today, you can make someone's load a little lighter.
You never know how heavy a heart is until you help carry it. So, let's make today memorable for the love we put out into the world. Not because anyone is watching or because we need recognition. But simply because kindness matters.
What Is One Small Act of Kindness You Can Give Today?
Think about the last time someone's small, unexpected kindness lightened a heavy day for you. Who was it, and did they ever know how much it mattered? Now think about the people around you today, the ones who might be carrying something heavy that you cannot see.
What is one small act of kindness you can give away today, even quietly, even if no one ever finds out? And what is an act of anonymous kindness you have received that you still think about?
