You Are Never as Alone as Your Anxiety Tells You
Updated: Oct 16
Anxiety tells convincing lies about loneliness, but a kind word, a check in on a friend, or a little gentleness toward your own mind can remind you that you are not walking alone.
Anxiety can make you feel alone but you are never as alone as your anxiety tells you. World Mental Health Day is a timely reminder to pay attention to our mental wellbeing, but we do not have to wait for a special day to check in with ourselves or someone we love.
Anxious thoughts love to lie. They build walls of worry, whisper that you do not belong, and trap you in a cycle of deep loneliness. They can make tomorrow’s possibilities feel like today’s reality, leaving you overwhelmed by things that have not even happened.
But those walls are temporary. Your current feelings do not define your future. Your mental health matters, and it is okay not to be okay today.
If this is where you find yourself, take a breath. You do not have to solve everything in this moment. You are allowed to pause, to reach out, and to give yourself the same gentleness you would offer someone you love.
Let’s Change the Atmosphere With Kindness
When you feel overwhelmed, shift your focus to what you can control which is your grace.
Remember that kindness is like a beautiful fragrance. It sweetens the air for everyone, but it always clings to the hand that gives the rose.
A kind word, a message to check on a friend, or a little patience with your own mind can release that fragrance into the world. Kindness is a quiet warmth. It can bridge the distance between us and remind someone that they have not been forgotten.
This does not mean kindness will make every difficult feeling disappear, or that you have to look after everyone else when you are struggling yourself. You are allowed to receive kindness too. Sometimes, being kind to yourself means resting, asking for support, or admitting that today feels heavy.
The Lady With Green Hair
Just the other day, I came across a fellow kindred spirit, a lady with green hair!
Her whole hair was dyed green. I thought I was unique in choosing to express my flair with my hair colour. Apparently, I am not!
There we were, on the side of the road, laughing at each other’s appearance. I had never met this lady before, but there was an instant connection in that little moment of recognition.
Eventually, we said our goodbyes. As I walked away, I had this huge grin on my face and a spring in my step. You would be right to wonder why. I simply could not shake the glow I had after my encounter with this green haired lady!
Nothing grand happened. We did not need to know each other’s stories or make a big promise to stay in touch. We shared a laugh, saw a little of ourselves in each other, and carried on with our days a little brighter.
That moment reminded me how a small human connection can stay with us. You never know when an unexpected conversation, a shared smile, or a kind word might brighten somebody’s day. Sometimes, it may brighten yours too.
Kindness Is the Sweet Fragrance of the Soul
Kindness is the sweet fragrance of the soul, drifting quietly into the dark to remind us that we are never truly alone.
You do not need a perfect response or a grand gesture. You can check in on a friend. You can listen without rushing to fix everything. You can tell someone you are glad they are here. You can also choose to be gentle with yourself when your thoughts feel loud.
And if anxiety or loneliness has been weighing heavily on you, please remember that you do not have to carry it all by yourself. Consider reaching out to someone you trust or a qualified mental health professional. Asking for support is not a failure. It is one way of caring for yourself.

A Small Reminder for Today
Take a deep breath. Come back to this moment. Stop letting future scenarios steal all of your present peace.
You do not have to know how everything will turn out before you allow yourself a little calm. You do not have to feel cheerful every day to deserve care. You do not have to earn kindness.
We are walking each other home, one gentle moment at a time.
Three Gentle Ways to Release the Fragrance of Kindness Today
You do not need a grand gesture when your mind feels loud. Start with something small and within your reach.
Share a kind word with someone, even a stranger on the side of the road.
Check in on a friend who has been quiet lately.
Be gentle with your own mind, especially on the days that feel heavy.
And if the weight feels like too much to carry alone, please reach out to someone you trust or a mental health professional. Asking for support is not weakness. It is another way of being kind to yourself.
Let’s Keep the Kindness Going
What has been the highlight of your day? In what ways have you spontaneously shared your fragrance of kindness? And when was the last time a stranger's small moment of warmth lifted you out of your own worries?
If today feels difficult, may this be your reminder: your feelings are real, but they are not the whole story. You are worthy of kindness, connection, and support.
