The Waitress, the Lapel Pin, and the Power of a Simple Thank You

How a Small Act of Kindness Became an Unforgettable Memriz Moment

"Be the reason someone smiles; be the reason someone feels loved and believes in the goodness in people."Roy T. Bennett

Sometimes, it's not the grand gestures but the smallest acts of appreciation that leave the deepest impression. This was exactly the case during my recent visit to the charming city of Mariana in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, a trip that left my heart full and reminded me of the quiet power of gratitude.

Over the course of our stay, my group and I spent most of our lunch and dinner times at one particular restaurant, a cosy, welcoming spot tucked into the heart of Mariana. The food was nothing short of spectacular: tender beef, flavorful fish and chicken, hearty pulses and potatoes, and an abundant selection of fresh fruits. But what truly made this place unforgettable was the warmth of its people, and one young waitress in particular.

On our last night, we decided to express our appreciation to the owner. To our delight, we learned that the restaurant was run by a gracious lady, and her daughter had been the waitress serving our group of eighteen English-speaking guests throughout our time there.

The Young Waitress Who Gave Her Best

Despite the obvious language barrier, this young woman gave her absolute best. Her English wasn’t fluent, but she met the challenge with patience and grace, trying to memorise each person’s unique order, no easy feat when catering to such a large group.

We complimented her in front of her mother, and the reaction was priceless.

The owner’s face lit up with pride. She was genuinely touched, not just by the compliments, but by the connection. So much so that she welcomed our offer to share a short prayer with her. We were honoured to do so.

The Waitress, the Lapel Pin, and the Power of a Simple Thank You

As we left the restaurant, I caught the young waitress’s eye. In a blend of broken Portuguese and simple English, I told her she was marvellous and that we were all grateful for her exceptional service.

Then, I handed her something she clearly didn’t expect: a Memriz lapel pin, a small token of our appreciation.

Her face lit up in surprise and delight. I could tell she was used to receiving the occasional tip, but this felt different. More personal. More memorable.

We even took a selfie together, capturing a beautiful exchange between two strangers brought together by kindness. And now, every time I see that photo, I remember her, and I hope every time she sees the pin, she remembers us too. The Waitress, the Lapel Pin, and the Power of a Simple Thank You.
