Have You Ever Let Fear of Failure Steal the Joy from Your Efforts?

If so, you’re not alone. This isn’t just another post about exam tips or how to stay organised. It’s a real-life reflection of what happens in our minds, our emotions, and even our bodies when we’re preparing for something that feels bigger than us, like an exam, a presentation, or a performance where the outcome feels like it defines our worth.

I want to talk about something deeper: Permission.

Permission to feel anxious. Permission to be human. And ultimately, permission to be kind to yourself.

This blog, “You Are Allowed to Make Mistakes”, is an invitation to release perfectionism, embrace grace, and shift your perspective when life’s pressure is peaking.

The Dread That Takes Over

I’ll be honest with you, I dread exams. I dread the mere mention of them. The announcement of a test date sends a ripple of anxiety through me. Studying becomes a mountain, the night before feels like standing at the edge of a cliff, and waiting for results.

It’s not just about the exam, it’s about what it represents: judgment, performance, success or failure, approval or disappointment.

The Unexpected Wisdom That Changed Everything

This week, I’m preparing for yet another exam.

I’ve studied. I’ve put in the hours. Yet the nerves won’t leave me alone.

In the middle of this mental whirlwind, my daughter casually asked me why I was studying. I gave her an earful, my rant, my worries, my what-ifs. She listened with the kind of patience that only a child full of quiet wisdom can offer.

Then she said something that stopped me in my tracks:

“It’s okay, Mum. You’re allowed to make mistakes.”

That one sentence disarmed my anxiety.

The Power of Permission

I hadn’t realised how tightly I was gripping the idea that I had to be perfect, that success meant no mistakes, no failure, no flaws. But her words gave me what I didn’t even know I needed: Permission.

Permission to not have it all figured out.Permission to be nervous and still show up. Permission to study without letting stress steal my joy.Permission to be human.

It was like a weight lifted off my shoulders.

You Are Allowed to Make Mistakes: How I’m Learning to Be Kinder to Myself During Exam Season

The title of this blog is not just a phrase; it’s a mindset I’m learning to embody.

I took my daughter’s words and turned them into a mantra:

  • I permit myself to make mistakes.

  • I permit myself to learn.

  • I permit myself to be enough, even when the outcome is uncertain.

Now, instead of dreading every moment, I’m choosing to lean into the process. I’m reminding myself that I don’t have to get everything right to still be worthy, prepared, or proud.

Can You Relate?

Maybe you’ve felt the pressure to ace a test, nail a presentation, launch a flawless product, or never let anyone see you sweat.

If so, here’s your permission slip: you’re allowed to make mistakes.
